Thunderbird Maintenance

Sorry to tease you with that whole cycle touring bit (seriously, that is more important than this, go read it and give me knowledge) but I'm fixing computers again. I am navigating a persistent but random and inconsistent problem with IMAP and Thunderbird that goes something like this ... I can ...

Cycling Holidays

We're scheming, N and I. A trip to the UK with bicycles. I imagine riding through the country side, stopping for tea from time to time, stopping for beer from time to time, stopping to unroll a picnic blanket and read for a while. It seems like there are touring companies ...

Fun with Calc

9/21/2012: Just use text to columns. Say someone gives you a spreadsheet full of names and addresses and you want to import them into a database that needs first name separate from last names. In Excel, one option is to split the cells along a delimiter. I forget how ...

Lost at VNC

I need a VNC client for Ubuntu. The Ubuntu repository has 5 or 6, and I really have no idea how to distinguish them. Normally I'd hit up Social Source Commons, but I don't see any Linux VNC clients there. It looks like the difference between the options has to do with the display protocol. DirectVNC uses the "remote framebuffer protocol" while xVNC4Viewer uses X and sVNC "provides a client for SVGA." I'm lost. The package descriptions aren't really helping:

Ladies, All the Ladies

Later, I will take up the meme. Promise. First though ... last night, WNYC was running a new segment on PS1's show on the history of feminist art and I kept thinking I must not have missed a lot of breaking news while I was off in the woods. ...

Escape from New York

The Ashram was a little funky, and I'm not sure I'd go there without Ana and Foca to back me up ... I can't say that and then link to them, can I? ... especially since my efforts to find any details about the rumored eucalyptus sauna came to ...

Lately

Moby Dick, which is brilliant and which I've been meaning to re-read ever since ... actually I just went to Laurie Anderson's site to find a URL and came up with a wee web radio of One White Whale. I like Laurie Anderson more than anyone else I ...

Kubla Khan and Uranium Ore

When I first discovered this phenomenon I figured I was probably late to the party, so I kept my mouth shut. I didn't come screaming to you all about the beautiful hilarity of many people writing customer reviews of mundane objects (or the absurdity of milk by ...
